On 25th September 1916, the British launched at attack to capture Morval, Gueudecourt, Lesboeufs and Morval. The attack was co-ordinated with the French. The attack was successful, the villages were seized, and heavy casualties inflicted on the Germans.
On the 1st October the French Sixth Army launched an offensive to the south to capture the twin village of Sailly-Saillisel. To protect the French left flank the British Army Fourth Army attacked towards Le Transloy.
During the Battle of Le Transloy the 88th Brigade temporarily attached to the British 12th Division, attacked north east from Gueudecourt. The Royal Newfoundland Regiment captured and held a German strong-point during the battle.
A Newfoundland Caribou memorial marks the location of the strong point they captured. The site also marks the furthest point of advance from the July 1st starting line of all British units during the Battle of the Somme.
