Ypres 2016 - Loos Memorial / Dud Corner Cemetery

Loos Memorial and Dud Corner Cemetery

The Loos Memorial surrounds Dud Corner Cemetery and lies on the Lens - Bethune Road 1 km west of Loos. It was the site of a German strong point, the Lens Road Redoubt, captured by the 15th (Scottish) Division on the first day of the Battle of Loos.

The Loos Memorial commemorates over 20,000 officers and men who have no known grave, who fell in the area from the River Lys to the old southern boundary of the First Army, east and west of Grenay.

Dud Corner Cemetery is believed to have been named due to the large number of unexploded enemy shells found in the neighbourhood after the Armistice.

The only burials in the cemetery from hostilities are four Black Watch Officers and a Dublin Fusilier, the other 679 are from the consolidation of cemeteries in the area brought together after the war.

Brigadier General NT Nickalls was also killed on the 26th September 1915. He was commanding the 63rd Brigade, part of the 21st Division.
