The city of Florence (Firenze) is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany.
The city was founded by the Romans in 59BC as a colony for veteran soldiers, situated along the Via Cassia, the main route between Rome and the north.

The city is bisected by the River Arno which runs to the Mediterranean Sea providing the opportunity for Florence to flourish as a trading and banking centre. It was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and became a major artistic, cultural, commercial, political, economic and financial center during the 13th to 16th centuries. The city had a turbulent history which included a period when it was ruled by the powerful Medici family.
