Ypres 2020 - Resevoir Cemetery


The Ypres Reservoir Cemetery is located in the north west of Ypres. The cemetery was began in October 1915 and used throughout the First World War. The cemetery contains 2,613 casualties of which  1,034 are identified.

BRIGADIER FRANK MAXWELL VC CSI DSO

Brigadier Francis Aylmer Maxwell was a 28 year old subaltern attached to Roberts Light Horse when he won the Victoria Cross assisting the saving the guns of Q Battery Royal Horse Artillery at Sanna's Post during the 2nd Boer War. Maxwell had already won the DSO serving on the Indian North West Frontier in the Tirah Campaign 1897-08. He was awarded the Companion of the Star of India (CSI) for service on the sub continent. Maxwell was already a highly decorated officer at the start if World War One. 
He was awarded a Bar to the DSO in November 1916 commanding 12th Battalion Middlesex Regiment. He rose to the rank of Brigadier commanding 27th Brigade, part of 9th (Scottish) Division.

Brigadier Frank Maxwell was killed by a sniper on 21st September 1917.

Albert Edward Eames died 25th February 1916, his brother William Charles died 20th April 1915 whilst serving with 1st Battalion Surrey Regiment and commemorated on the Menin Gate.

BRIGADIER AC LOWE CMG DSO


Lieutenant Arthur Cecil Lowe was a volunteer officer serving with the City Imperial Volunteers (Field Battery) during the Second Boer War when he was awarded the DSO. After the Boer War he served with the Honourable Artillery Company rising to the rank of Major. In WW1 he would command of 236 Brigade RFA and the 47th Divisional Ammunition Column, before being appointed Commander Royal Artillery 66th (2nd East Lancashire) Divisional Artillery.

Brigadier Lowe was killed in action near Zonnebeke on 24th November 1917.

SECOND LIEUTENANT ALBERT GRATTON MM

55391 Gunner A Gratton is recorded as entering France on the 21st April 1915. Albert Gratton was commissioned from an Officer Cadet Unit 1st September 1917. He died 20th November 1917 serving with 211 Siege Battery RGA. Albert is commemorated at St James Church, Crosshill, Derbyshire.

25535 Sergeant Huitt was commissioned 7th July 1917. Second Lieutenant Huitt  died 13th December 1917 serving with the 77th Heavy Artillery Group. He is commemorated on the Kingston upon Hull War Memorial.

William Thomas Le Noury
William Thomas Le Noury enlisted in Guernsey, a resident of Mount Durand, St Peter Port. Gunner 89222 Le Noury was killed in action serving with the 9th Division Ammunition Column attached to 77th Heavy Artillery Group.

Walter Guppy  enlisted in Croydon into the Royal Garrison Artillery. He died 13th December 1917 serving with 33rd Divisional Artillery Head Quarters.

Bombardier Alfred George Taylor

Alfred George Taylor enlisted in Lambeth, London into the Royal Field Artillery. 
He died 13th December 1917 serving with 162 (Camberwell) Brigade RFA part of the 33rd Divisional Artillery

Gunner G Pavitt

George Pavitt enlisted into the Royal Garrison Artillery at Clifton Street, Shoreditch, London, and at some stage during WW1 transferred to the Royal Field Artillery. He died 13th December 1917
