Ypres 2020 - Christmas Truce Statue Messines

Messines Christmas Truce Statue

In Messines is a statue to commemorate the impromptu truce on Christmas Day 1914 which took place a few kilometres away from the village. Soldiers from both sides left their trenches to greet each other, an encounter that would result in a football match.

The statue, a joint design by students from Britain and Germany, was unveiled in December 2014 on the centenary of the Christmas truce. It features a British and German soldier shaking hands over a football.
