Wormhoudt Massacre Barn |
During the withdrawal of the British Expeditionary Force to Dunkirk in May 1940, a group of soldiers fighting a rear-guard action expended their ammunition, and surrendered to the Germans. The soldiers were from the 2nd Battalion,Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 4th Battalion Cheshire Regiment, and gunners of 210 Battery, 53rd (The Worcestershire Yeomanry) Anti-ank Regiment, Royal Artillery, as well as French soldiers.
They were taken to a small barn near Wormhoudt. There they were massacred by Waffen SS Soldiers and 80 POWs lost their lives.

To commemorate those lost an avenue of oak trees were planted in memory of the murdered men.

Amongst those killed were Gunners from 210 Battery, 53 (The Worcestershire Yeomanry) Anti-Tank Regiment Artillery.
