The Channel Islands lie off the Normandy Coast of the Cotentin Peninsular. The main islands are Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark. They are organised in Crown Dependencies, the Bailwicks of Jersey and Guernsey, each with independent legislature. They do not form part of the United Kingdom , being Crown Dependencies, the UK providing defence and international relations.
The Bailwick of Guernsey includes Alderney, Sark, Herm and a number of other small islands.
The island of Guernsey covers an area of 27 sq miles (71 sq km) , the farthest distance being 10 miles (16km) SE to NE. The capital of the island is St Peter Port.

The Channel Islands were part of Normandy and in 1066 they were part of the Anglo-Norman realm. In 1204, when Normandy was ceded to France, the islands were given the choice of reverting to France or remaining loyal to the English Crown. The Islanders chose to remain with the |English Crown and in return were granted the right to maintain their own laws and privileges.
Guernsey and the rest of the Channel Isles have been under British influence since 1204 apart one brief period from 30th June 1940 to 9th May 1945. The Channel Islands were the only British territory to be occupied by the Germans during the Second World War.
