The German reaction to the landing was swift and a number of
Kampfgruppes (ad hoc formations), were deployed to meet the British landings. A
blocking line was established a few miles east of the landing areas to meet the
British troops advancing towards Arnhem.
When the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron emerged from a culvert under the railway line to Arnhem they were ambushed and resulted in the dash to the bridge being stopped.
