Ypres 2012 - Railway Dugouts

Travelled to Ypres by train from Brugge via Kortrijk. Just managed to catch the Railway Dugouts Cemetery as we sped past.

Ypres 2012 - Reservoir Cemetery

The Ypres Reservoir Cemetery lies in the north west of Ypres and contains the graves of 2,701 servicemen of the British Empire and one German.

Ypres Reservoir Cemetery
 This cemetery was begun in October 1915 and used by fighting units and field ambulances until after the Armistice, when it contained 1,099 graves. The cemetery was later enlarged when graves were brought in from the battlefields of the salient.

The town of Ypres was under constant bombardment from 1914 to 1918 and this resulted in graves within the cemetery being destroyed.

Knott Brothers

 Buried within Ypres Reservoir Cemetery are brothers Captain Henry Basil Knott and Major John Leadbitter Knott. Captain HB Knott was killed in Ypres on the 7th September 1915 whilst serving with the 9th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. His brother had originally joined 9NF, and was then posted to the 10th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment. On the 1st July 1916, Major JL Knott was killed on the Somme near Fricourt.

The brothers were the sons of Sir James Knott owner of the Prince line, one of the largest shipping lines in the world at the time, and resided at close house Wylam., Northumberland. He tried to use his position to have both of his sons bodies repatriated to the UK. This failed, however, he was able to arrange for the body of Major JL Knott to be buried along side his brother in Ypres.

Following the death of his sons, Sir John sold the Prince line and created a trust for charity work in the north easy of England. He also commemorated his sons in the provision of the bell tower at the Church of St Georges in Ypres.

The cemetery contains the grave of Gunner William Buttler, D/250th Brigade RFA. Gunner Buttler was killed on the 3rd January 1918, his next of kin being recorded as living in Hebburn Colliery.

And as many of the memorials and cemeteries around the Salient testify, the contribution of the British Empire from the Canadians holding the line during the first gas attack in April 1915, the Indians bolstering the defences during the Second Battle of Ypres, the South Africans, to the Australians finally taking Paschendaele in November 1917 was significant. And not forgetting New Zealand:
