New York Day 4 - FDNY 9/11 Memorial

 The Fire Department New York Memorial commemorates the 343 Firefighters who lost their lives in the attack on the World Trade Centre on the 11th September 2001. 

A Memorial Wall located at FDNY Engine 10 Ladder 10, directly across from the World Trade Center site features a bronze sculpture portraying the events of 9/11 and is inscribed “Dedicated to those who fell and those who carry on. May we never forget.”

New York Day 4 - 9/11 Memorial


 On the 11th September 2001 the United States of America came under terrorist attack when four airliners were highjacked and used to target New York and Washington DC. Two planes struck the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York, one the Pentagon in Washington DC, with the remaining plane crashing in Somerset County Pennsylvania as a result of passengers foiling the hijackers.

The National September 11 Memorial commemorates the 2,977 people killed during the terrorist attacks of September 11 2001 and the 6 people killed in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The memorial is formed as twin pools located in the footprint of the North and South Towers of the World Trade Centre which was destroyed on 9/11. Around the walls of the pools are a record of those lost in the World Trade Centre New York, the Pentagon in Washington, and on Flight 93 which crashed in Pennsylvania.

September 11th 2023 would be the 22nd anniversary of 9/11. On the 10th September tributes were left to remember those lost ahead of the National Service of Remembrance on the 11th.

Father Michael Judge served as a chaplain to the New York City Fire Department. He was killed on September 11 in the North Tower when he was hit with debris from the South Tower collapsing. He was the first certified fatality of the September 11 attacks.

Firefighter George C Cain served with the FDNY 8th Battalion Ladder 7. On 9/11 he and his team were in the Marriot Hotel evacuating people when the South Tower collapsed, the debris killing George and many of his compatriots within the Marriot.

On 11th September 2001 highjacked Flight 77 flew into the west wall of the Pentagon in Washington DC killing 125 people as well as the 64 on board.

Of those lost in the Pentagon, the US Navy lost 33 sailors, the US Army 22 soldiers, the remaining 70 casualties being civilian personnel. As well as a memorial at the Pentagon remembering those killed on 9/11, thier names are recorded on the National 9/11 Memorial in New York.

Flight 93 was highjacked by terrorists on September 11th who intended to fly it into a into a federal government building in Washington, D.C. The operation failed when the passengers fought back. The passangers attempted to storm the cockpit and retake the plane. Their actions forced the terrorists to crash the plane in a field in Somerset County Pennsylvania. The terrorist action was thwarted but resulted in everyone aboard the flight being killed.

The last recorded words of passenger Todd Beamer, an Oracle account manager before he and other passengers attempted to retake the plane from the hijackers were "Lets Roll". 



A memorial to those killed on Flight 93 is located at the crash site in Sumerson County, Pennsylvania. Thier names are also recorded on the National 9/11 Memorial in New York.

New York 2023 - Day 1

 The Empire State Building is located on 5th Avenue and 34th Street being the world's tallest building from 1931 to 1970. It stands 443 metres (1,454 feet) tall to the top of its radio antenna with 102 stories. It is takes it's name form the nickname for New York State, Empire State.

Maddison Square Garden has been a multi-purpose indoor arena since 1879. The current building is the fourth building to bear that name and opened in 1968. It was built on the site of the former Penn Station. The stadium is the home venue for the New York Knicks basketball team, and the New York Rangers Ice Hockey Team.

The New Yorker Hotel is situated at 481 8th Avenue on the corner of 34th Street. It was opened in January 1930. It's 42 stories contains over 1,000 rooms.

The Moynihan Train Hall is situated on 8th Avenue and is part of Pennsylvanian Station. The hall is named after Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan who championed the conversion of the US Postal Services James A. Farley Building to become an extension of Penn Station.

The architecture of the Moynihan Train Hall resembles that of the original Pennsylvanian Station which was opened in 1910 and demolished in 1968.

Pier 11 is situated on the East River at the end of Wall Street. It provides views of the Brooklyn Bridge, Governors Island and New York Harbour.

The pier is a ferry landing for ferries connecting various parts of New York including Brooklyn.

Wall Street in Lower Manhattan is the centre of the financial district of New York and a major part of the global financial system.

Trinity Church is located at the end of Wall Street on Broadway. The original church was built in 1698 and was destroyed during the Great New York City Fire of in 1776. A second building was consecrated in 1790, which was demolished after being weakened by severe snows during the winter of 1838–39. The current building was completed in 1846.

The churchyard contains the graves of many prominent Americans as well as a Soldiers Memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives as Prisoners of War whilst in captivity in New York during the American Revolutionary War 1775 to 1783.

One World Trade Centre was built in the shadow of the original twin towers of the World Trade Centre which was destroyed in the terrorist attacks of 9th September 2001. Opened in 2014 it stands 546.2 metres at its spire with 104 stories. It is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

The Oculus is the World Trade Center Transportation Hub built as a replacement for the Hudson Terminal which was demolished following the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre on September 11th 2001. A temporary station was opened in 2003, the Oculus in March 2016.
