Pas De Calais - V3 Cannon Mimoyecques

At Mimoyecques, near St Omer, the Germans developed a super gun, housed underground, as part of the Vengeance Weapons, Vergeltungswaffen' program.
The V3 Cannon was a multi-charge gun which was developed to fire hundreds of 140 kg (300 pound) projectiles per hour up to a range of 165 km (103 miles).

The design was based upon plans captured from the French in 1940. In 1918, the German Army began bombardment of Paris using a 230mm Krupp Rail Gun which had a range of 130 km (81 miles). In response the French began their own long range artillery development experimenting with a multi-charge gun. The signing of the Armistice in November 1918 meant the gun never reached prototype stage, the plans being archived.

The Germans began their own development based upon the French plans, but  soon found issues with the use of multiple charges as they would quickly degrade the gun barrel. Their solution was to have a series of small charges along the length of the barrel in small tubes at the side. As the projectile moved along the barrel each charge would fire in turn increasing its velocity achieving a muzzle velocity of 1,500 metres per seconds on departing the barrel. They built their first prototype which was successfully tested in April / May 1943. The V3 was also known as the Hochdruckpumpe (High Pressure Pump), to disguise it's intended use.

Hitler decided that the V3 Cannon would supplement the V1 and V2 weapons, the gun would have the specific role of bombarding London. The expected rate of fire was 10 rounds per minute, delivering 600 rounds per hour on London. 


The plan was to build two batteries, each consisting of 5 shafts, with 5 barrels per shaft, a total of 50 guns.

 A site at Mimoyecques, 165 km (103 miles) from London was selected for the location of the V3. Construction in a limestone hill began in September 1943. Two separate facilities were initiated connected by a railway tunnel. Difficulties in construction resulted in only the Eastern Battery being developed.

The shafts were set at an angle of 50 degrees (889 mils) and reached a depth of 105 metres (344 feet). Each drift was set on bearing of 299 degrees (5,316 mils), a direct line with Westminster Bridge.

Intelligent reports and aerial reconnaissance detected the work at Mimoyecques. The true purpose of the facility was not known, though it was suspected it would involve rockets and long range artillery.


 Several  bombing raids were conducted between November and June 1944 inflicting minimal damage.

On the 4th July 617 Squadron RAF began bombing the site with 12,000 lb Tall Boy bombs. The damage inflicted was such that the site was abandoned by the end of July 1944.

The German Airforce, Luftwaffe, began experimenting with pilotless aircraft in 1939. The first powered flight of a ZG-76  occurred on the 10th December 1942 when a  flying bomb was launched from an aircraft.

Further testing was carried out and ground launched V1 followed. Launching was facilitated by a 48 metre (160 feet) ramp. Full production commenced in March 1944 at the Volkswagen plant in Fallersleben, near Hamburg. By the end of April 1944, 1,000 flying bombs were ready for launching.

The V1 was 8.3 metres (27 feet) long. It was powered by Argus As 109-014 Pulsejet and steered by gyroscopes and a magnetic compass.

The V1 had an operational range of 250 km (160 miles) delivering a 850 kg (1,870 pound) war head. The range  was determined by  a setting on a vane anemometer which cut the fuel link and set the wings to put the bomb into a dive.
 
The ground launched V1 was propelled along an ramp by a steam operated catapult. The steam was pumped into a hollow tube which propelled a trolley up the 48 metre ramp to the launch speed of 580 km/h (360 mph).

 The construction of fixed launch sites in the Pas de Calais began in late summer 1943. The intent was to launch an offensive in December 1943 in conjunction with the V2 and V3 weapons. The storage bunkers were shaped like a ski, a feature that would come to the notice of the allies. Intelligence reports would identify the ’ski sites’ as rocket launching locations.

By November 1943 the Allies had identified 75 ski sites in the Pas de Calais. In response to the threat, the Allies launched ‘Operation Crossbow’ the intent being to destroy and neutralise the V1 ski sites by air bombardment. The first raid was launched by the USAF on 15th  December 1943. The Operation would be expanded to cover all Vengeance Weapon locations including production, storage and launching sites. This included the V2 heavy sites at Watten and Wizernes, the V3 gun at Mimoyecques , as well as the V1 sites.

The attacks lead to the  focus of the Germans on using mobile launch facilities for the V1.

Despite the efforts of Operation Crossbow, the first V1 landed on London at 04:25 13th June 1944,  seven days after the Allied landings in Normandy.  It hit a railway bridge on Grove Road killing six people in nearby houses.

 Attacks launched from the Pas de Calais continued until Allies overran the last V1 launch site in range of Britain in October 1944.  A total of 9,521 V1s had been launched from the region.
The Vengeance weapon campaign would continue from the Low Countries.

Pas De Calais - La Coupole Wizernes

La Coupole at Wizernes was one of two permanent sites which were built as launch facilities for German V2 Rockets during World War Two. Hitler had ordered the building of the facilities in the Pas de Calais, the closest occupied territory to Britain and therefore providing the greatest operational range.

The V Vergeltungswaffen weapons were long range artillery with the principle aim of targeting cities as a means of inflicting terror. The Germany Army developed the V2, a rocket with a range of 320km (200 miles) which delivered a 1,000 kg (2,200 pounds) warhead.

The first site to be built in the Pas De Calais for the V2 was a  Blockhaus at Watten. Construction commenced in March 1943. The Blockhaus soon came to the attention of the Allies and a bombing campaign targeting the facility started in August 1943.


Following the bombing raids Hitler ordered the building of a second facility at Wizernnes, 22km (13 miles) from Watten.

The V2 bunker complex  would be built into the side of a hillside and protected by a 71 metre diameter reinforced concrete dome. The complex would house V2 assembly / servicing areas, a liquid oxygen (LOX) production plant,  and storage in 7 kilometres of tunnels. External launch sites were located in an adjacent quarry, the rockets would be moved from under the dome on rails to the launch pad.

The Allies were aware of an abnormal building site near  St Omer, but it was not until March 1944 that the location began to be targeted. Over a period of 3 months, 10 air raids were mounted by the US Airforce dropping 2,000 lb bombs. La Coupole remained intact, however the logistics for the site were destroyed.

On the 24th June 1944, 617 Squadron RAF bombed the dome with 12,000 pound Tall Boy bombs, but failed to damage the Cupola. Another raid with Tall Boys was launched on the 17th July. Although the dome was not hit, the earthquake effect of the bombs caused a land slide which collapsed the hillside. The dome support was undermined and the two vertical entryways to the launching site were blocked. The site deemed unusable and was abandoned at the end of July 1944.

The Germans had attempted the construction of two permanent V2 sites, the Blockhaus at Watten and the La Cupola and Wizerenes. The efforts of the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Airforce resulted in no V2 Rockets being launched from the Pas De Calais. The Allied advance form the Normandy bridgehead into the Pas De Calais forced the Germans to look at using mobile launch sites in  the Netherlands. The first site was erected in the Hague on the 6th September 1944. On the 8th the first V2 rocket landed on London.
