Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. It's name is derived from Béal Feirste, meaning "rivermouth of the sandbacks". The city flourished as a result of the industrial revolution becoming the largest line producer in the world. The shipyard of Harland and Wolf dominated the skyline of the city.

Located on the River Lagan, it was the Harland & Wolf Shipyard where the RMS Titanic was built.

The Titanic Hotel is located in the old  Drawing Offices of Harland & Wolf (H&W) where the Titanic was conceived and the plans of the Olympic Class ships - Olympic and Titanic, were drawn.

Located next to the H & W Drawing Office were the slipways that built the two Olympic class trans-Atlantic liners alongside each other. The hotel is now opposite the Titanic Experience which tells the story of the Titanic in the shadow of where the ship was built.

On the Titanic's maiden, and only, journey, she left Southampton and crossed the channel to Cherbourg. In 1912, the port of Cherbourg did not have facilities for the large Atlantic liners to dock and pick up passengers. Tenders were required to ferry passengers from the port to the liners anchored offshore. The tender SS Nomadic was used to ferry the Titanic's passengers in 1912.
