Chateau of Zonnebeke

The Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 is housed in the Chateau of Zonnebeke. The original chateau and church were destroyed during the Battles of Ypres.

The area became a desolate battlefield, and the nearby village of Passchendaele came synonymous with the mud and slaughter of trench warfare.

The Chateau was rebuilt in 1926, but by the 1980s had fallen into disrepair. It was revived as part of an exhibition held in 1987 to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendale), and opened as a permanent museum in 1989.
