Somme 2023 - Sunken Lane

On the 1st July 1916 the 29th division were tasked to capture Beaumont  Hamel. On the left were the 86th Brigade which included the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. A sap was dug from the front line to a sunken lane.

Prior to Zero Hour, the 1st Lancashire Fusiliers moved forward into the Sunken Lane in order to be closer to the enemy lines when the assault began.

Lieutenant Malins filmed the events from a sunken lane.

A commemoration stone remembers the men of the 1st Lancashire Fusiliers who left the 
Sunken Lane at 07:30 to attack Beaumont Hamel.

The Battalion would loose 165 men killed, 312 wounded and 11 missing presumed dead.
