Located
in Poperinghe Town Hall are cells that were once used as execution cells for
those sentenced to be shot at dawn.

The
cells were used to house prisoners guilty of offences such as drunkenness
but gained their notoriety as the place soldier's were held who were condemned
to execution. The precise number executed was not recorded, thought it is
believed to be at least five. Outside in the courtyard is the execution post to
which men were tied and blindfolded before being shot.
